My Struggles as a writer

Every writer struggles at some point with an aspect of writing. I seem to struggle with organization and structure the most. My writing does not flow from one thought to another easily and does not always connect cohesively. Points are clear and understood but transitions are not easy to follow. These may be my struggles because I am more right brained. Left brained functions include analyzation and organization. Those who

lean toward left-brain functions tend to use organizational strategies such as charts, labels, cubbies to place supplies or mail. This is not my strength. While I appreciate the neatly organized space and would benefit greatly from it, it is not how my mind is wired. Creative writing is my strength. Creating imaginary worlds, creatures, and fantasy images is my passion. Reading the work of other writers would be help me greatly. An even greater help would be to write and have others read my writing and providing a critique. This is a strategy I found to be most helpful during my time at the University of Texas at Dallas in a class taught by Tony Daniel. He is an award winning science fiction/fantasy writer. I experienced the most excitement in hi class when he shared writing he was working on for one of my favorite television shows. During my time there I was forced to write...a lot every week. We were to write, read other's writing, and analyze the writing of other authors. It was difficult yet rewarding. The focus was on writing creatively within a structure. It was difficult in the beginning and became a little easier as the semester drew to a close. I could improve my writing by going back to this workshop method that Tony Daniel used with us. It will be a challenge overcoming the tendency to not share my writing. It will be difficult to get better if no one knows that i'm writing.
